Local author Mary Bleckwehl, of Northfield, spoke to scholars at St. John Paul II earlier this week in two breakout sessions. The first session was directed toward the 5-8 graders, where Bleckwehl talked about her writing process and how unexpected events often lead to the best stories. She shared some of her brainstorming ideas and how to overcome the inevitable obstacles that pop up often in the writing process.
The second session of the morning was for the K-4 scholars. Bleckwehl encouraged the scholars to read and write as much as they can to hone their skills and to bring out their creativity. Imagination, she said, is key to a good story and lends itself to fiction writing. She read her latest book, “Claire’s Hair” to the scholars. The scholars all laughed and giggled as she read the story out loud, enjoying the descriptive writing and the colorful illustrations. A number of the scholars had pre-ordered her books and had Bleckwehl sign them inside the front cover.
